John TobinBoston City Councilor John Tobin has started a new stand-up comedy club, Tommy’s Comedy Lounge. The Lounge held its grand opening last Saturday, playing to a packed crowd at the Charles Playhouse in the Theatre District.

The evening got off to a rocky start, with security forced to kick out the club’s first two paying customers, WickedLocal.com reported. But the show ran smoothly after that, with Boston Mayor Thomas Menino making a surprise appearance, even telling a few jokes.

The Lounge will feature comedy acts Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights at 8:30pm.

The club is not Tobin’s first venture into stand-up comedy. He is also responsible for creating the Boston Comedy Hall of Fame, which was started last year to raise money to help comedians in need of health care. Steven Wright was the first inductee.
