Adam Sandler fans everywhere have been wondering the same thing: will his portrayal of a stand-up comic in his new upcoming Judd Apatow flick lead to a return to the medium that first got him noticed? Unfortunately, it seems we’ll have no such luck.
The bearer of bad news was Apatow himself, director of the upcoming film Funny People. He revealed Sandler’s aversion to returning to the stage in a recent interview with Empire Magazine:
Adam hadn’t done stand-up comedy for 12 years. We arrived unannounced at a lot of clubs around town and I remember we were driving to one place and he just said, ‘This is exactly why I don’t do this – I so do not want to do this!’” Apatow then added, “Adam was one of the best stand-ups around. He has this gift that no one remembers. He killed (was brilliant).
