Andy KaufmanThe fifth annual Andy Kaufman Award Competition is underway. The Competition serves as a showcase for up-and-coming comedians, as well as a celebration honoring the work of Andy Kaufman. This year marks the 25th anniversary of Kaufman’s death. Prospective contestants must submit a DVD of no more than six minutes of their original performance material. They must also submit an entry form from the official website, theandykaufmanaward.com. The deadline for entries is Oct. 2, 2009.

The final performance — in front of a live crowd and a team of judges — to determine the winner will be held at Caroline’s on Broadway on Nov. 3. The winner of the Andy Kaufman Award will receive a cash prize of $2,500, stage time at Caroline’s and press.

“The Award recognizes someone who doesn’t try to fit into a box, just as Andy never attempted to match any existing concept of comedy,” said Andy’s brother, Michael Kaufman.

The previous winners are Kristin Schaal, Suzanne Whang, Reggie Watts, and Brent Weinbach.
