I hate Elmo. I really do. I have a one year-old son now and feel I’m finally allowed to have an official opinion on that little red monster from Sesame Street. Even though my son can’t fully appreciate the educational lessons this children’s television juggernaut teaches its viewers each day at 7 a.m. on my local New Jersey PBS station, I have noticed my child seems to like Cookie Monster a lot more than Elmo. And I’m thankful for that.
Personally, I think it’s a bit obnoxious that this puppet constantly refers to himself in the third person, as in “Excuse, Elmo” or “Elmo has a question for you.” But this morning when I was watching the show, eating the edges of mushy Eggo waffles with my kid, this bit, wherein Ricky Gervais attempts to soothe the little red shit to sleep, killed me.
And you should know, this isn’t the first time Gervais has performed with Elmo. Most recently, he’s sung with him live at Carnegie Hall. Before that, he was on another episode of Sesame Street with Elmo. Check it out here.
