Billy GardellTV sitcom junkies and stand-up comedy nerds will unite tonight as the series premiere of Mike & Molly hits CBS at 9:30 pm EST. For the latter group of viewers, it’ll be a chance to see veteran comedian Billy Gardell make his case to become a prime time television star for a major network. For sitcom fans, it’ll be a chance to see if the folks who brought us Two and a Half Men and Big Bang Theory can create a show just as popular when the two main characters are plus-size.

Gardell plays a cop while his love interest, played by Melissa McCarthy (Molly, a teacher); they meet at an Overeaters Anonymous meeting and well, you can imagine the rest. The reviews for the show, so far, have been relatively positive. Critics, of course, are not fans of the incredibly obvious fat jokes that fly around during the course of each episode; but most agree that Gardell and McCarthy are hard not to like. The Hollywood Reporter probably best sums it up, saying that “Mike & Molly” [is] cold and calculating, despite its likable leads and cast.”

You’ll have to tune in tonight to draw your own conclusions. For now, check out a little behind-scenes-look at the show as well as a few scenes from the first episode. And after the jump, check out a clip of Gardell from his Comedy Central half hour special. Enjoy!
