kathy-griffin2Kathy Griffin has just landed a deal with Bravo to air four, yes, FOUR new stand-up comedy specials in 2011 – one in each quarter of the year. And yes, each one will be an hour long.

“We are continuing to expand to new formats and genres and there is no better way to start off 2011 than giving Kathy Griffin an unprecedented four new stand-up comedy specials on Bravo in one year,” says Andy Cohen, Executive VP of Original Programming at Bravo. “Kathy’s quick fire humor and ability to tap into pop culture make for must watch television.”

“I went to Bravo and told them I thought I was being a little too nice in my stand-up specials,” says Griffin. “They agreed… and gave me four more. Let the fur fly.”

What do you guys think of this? Louis C.K. does one hour long special a year after many months spent preparing his material, and that’s considered extremely prolific. Granted, it sounds like the comedy in these specials will revolve around pop culture and be largely topical. Still though, like Griffin or not, is this a surefire recipe for quantity over quality?

I think Griffin has finely honed her ability to be present on stage and rif on topical pop-culturey things. IF anybody could pull this off well, it would be her. I think agree with Adam’s notion that it will like a “Best Ever” format more than a stand-up special we’re used to.

Well, I have a feeling that these specials A: will not be of the same quality of stand-up as Louis C.K’s (kind of a given of even the highest caliber of comic these days) and B: will most certainly be written by a room full of people.

I bet it is more like “Best 3 Months Ever” than a stand-up show.
