The most controversial figure in comedy this week has been, without a doubt, Tracy Morgan. The actor and comic is taking heavy flak for a rather anti-gay stand-up bit he performed last week in Nashville. While we love a good edgy joke, we’re certainly not fans of this kind of comedy. As you might have guessed.
The routine has led to some polarization among stand-up comics, too. Some have come out to support Morgan, one of whom being Chris Rock, who tweeted, “I dont know about you, but I dont want to live in world where Tracy Morgan cant say foul inappropriate shit.”
Wanda Sykes begged to differ. Her response, also on Twitter: “Ok, piss’d reading, “I don’t want 2 live n a world where Tracy can’t say…” I Do! U Keep the world, just break me off an evolved country.”
Aaaand cue backtracking. In a statement following Sykes’s smackdown, Rock said, “When Tracy says something I usually don’t take it anymore serious than I would a statement from Gary Busey or Flavor Flav . . . but after reading everything Tracy said wow, I get it. That [stuff] wasn’t called for and I don’t support it at all.”
I believe the correct term here is “owned.”
