Following in the steps of the immensely succinct title of The Fighter, a film is now in the works called The Comedian. According to the New York Post, the project penned by Art Linson and the Roastmaster General, Jeffrey Ross will have Sean Penn directing and Robert De Niro starring as “an aging, bitterly, funny stand-up comic.”
One can’t help but think of Rupert Pupkin, De Niro’s infamous character in Scorsese’s King of Comedy at this announcement. As playing a character who aspired to be a comedian and then “strong-armed” his way on national TV, it would almost seem as though The Comedian would almost be a sequel 30 years later.
