Old and busted: corporate sponsorship. New hotness: Kickstarter-funded ventures.
So that means Eugene Mirman’s on the cutting edge of hot. The comedian announced that the next installment — the fourth, as some might call it — of the Eugene Mirman Comedy Festival will be funded by grassroots cash donated online, presuming they meet their $18,000 minimum.
Even though Mirman says the fest started as a joke, it’s a big deal in Brooklyn, NYC; past guests include John Oliver, Fred Armisen, Sarah Vowell, Jim Gaffigan, Janeane Garofalo and many more familiar faces.
And, if you donate, you don’t just get the satisfaction of contributing to a kickass comedy cause. Twenty bucks gets your name printed in the festival guide as a “Racist.” A thousand gets you, among other perks, an animal in the petting zoo with your name (yes, a petting zoo at a comedy festival is normal). And, if you’re feeling particularly generous or insane, a donation of a thousand dollars will earn you a “leather jacket covered in swears, culturally and racially insensitive messages and inspirational sayings,” along with access to all festival shows and fiestas.
