Comedian W. Kamau Bell released one of the best stand-up comedy albums of last year, Face Full of Flour, and he doesn’t seem to be slowing down any time soon.
He, along with comedians Janine Brito and Nato Green set up a Kickstarter account to produce Laughter Against the Machine: A Tour Documentary. The comics are asking for donations to reach their goal of $20,000 to produce the documentary. For the last few years, the trio have been been playing safely liberal spots like San Francisco and the Pacific Northwest; the comedians pride themselves not just on being funny but also sending a message of tolerance to its audiences.
But now, they plan on touring in areas of the United States known for their ignorance and lack of liberalism to find out if they can truly take a joke or not. Here’s how they explain what they’re trying to do:
… the time has come for us to leave our creature comforts. It’s time for us to step away from the land of organic quinoa, gourmet coffee made by bespectacled hipsters, latex-free butt plugs sold by androgynous feminists, and venture into less familiar territory. The time has come for us to put our money where our mouth is and wade into the most polarized quagmires in the US, the flashpoints of American ignorance and upheaval.
