My first encounter with Garry Shandling was when I was five or six years old. I was completely obsessed with an oddly star-packed movie called Mother Goose Rock ‘n Rhyme, where Garry Shandling plays “Jack” of Jack and Jill fame. He wears a blue wig. It’s killer. Fortunately, though, that wasn’t his only role. The dude broke comedy ground for six years during the run of the before-its-time Larry Sanders Show. Check out a clip of the show within a show below.
The point is, Shandling’s position as contemporary comedy legend is well deserved. So much, in fact, that its led Montreal’s Just For Laughs Festival to select him for a Just For Laughs Lifetime Achievement Award. He’ll be feted alongside Louis C.K., Steven Levitan, Christopher Lloyd, Paul Feig, and Ken Jeong (who are all getting different awards) on Friday, July 29 during the festival’s comedy conference. Nice work, Garry. Congrats and thanks for the laughs!
