Broadway is no stranger to controversy. Remember the late-1960s show Hair? No stone was left unturned: the show highlighted illegal drugs, profanity, sexuality, and, of course, lots of nudity. Today’s controversial Broadway play, though, is raising eyebrows for different reasons. The Book of Mormon, which won a literal shit ton of Tony Awards and has garnered praise across the board, satirizes the religion with a healthy amount of absurdity. I mean, there’s a character named General Butt-Fucking-Naked. And the whole thing was put together by South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone, who pretty much exist to push the envelope.
In case you’re looking to learn a little more about the cast and how they reacted to the script on first read, you’re in luck. CBS has a lovely couple of interviews with stars Josh Gad, Andrew Rannells, Nikki James and Rory O’Malley, and they dish about their excitement and their anxieties. And Disney princesses. Take a look!
