The 29th edition of Montreal’s Just For Laughs comedy festival came to an end on Sunday after weeks of shows, panels, street fairs and speeches. But one speech, Marc Maron’s keynote address on July 28 during the Comedy Conference portion of the festival is what resounded most with comedians, industry and fans alike. We posted the full audio of Maron’s speech a few days ago. But really, nothing gets better than actually watching it all go down.
Below is the uncut and uncensored version of the speech, complete with comedian Andy Kindler’s introduction. Maron touches on a great many things in the address, most notably how comedy quite literally saved his life. There’s really no need for exhaustive exposition here. Just hit play, sit back and watch. And depending on the type of person you are, maybe you want to grab a tear-absorbent cloth of some kind.
