Katt Williams: “I don’t have to apologize for being pro-American” (Video)

So, remember that apology comedian Katt Williams issued through his publicist, likely in an effort to diffuse the negative press surrounding what some people have labeled an “anti-Mexican” rant he made onstage? Well, the statement did not come from Williams at all and was given to the press without the comedian’s approval. That’s what the embattled comic told CNN anchor TJ Holmes this morning during a live interview. Furthermore, Williams said he’d never apologize.

“I’m not allowed to. As a stand-up, the only thing I sell is uncensored thought…I’m not allowed, then, to come back the next day and apologize,” Williams said. “That’s for the Tracy Morgans of the world. I meant what I said, and I said what I meant.” However, Williams seemed to back peddle a bit when he followed that up with, “I’m apologizing if somebody thought I was trying to be anti-Mexican. Mexicans are my friends.” And then later in the interview, he added, “If there’s something anti-Mexican about what I said, then I apologize for the Anti-Mexican-ness of it. I was talking to one individual.”

The supposed racist tirade in question went down during a recent show in Phoenix, a city with a large Mexican population. During a joke about race, a heckler engaged Williams with “Fuck America,” Williams told CNN. “If a person starts their heckling with “‘F America,’ then that gives me the right to defend my country.” So, in his own way, Williams, in part, defended the United States with the following:

“…do you remember when white people used to say go back to Africa?” Katt says toward the end of the rant. “And we’d have to tell them we don’t want to? So if you love Mexico, bitch, get the fuck over there! [sings "Star Spangled Banner"] We were slaves, bitch. You just all work like that at the landscapers. It’s not even racial — you’re a bitch! I don’t give a fuck what race that is, that’s a pussy.”

Considering the situation — and notwithstanding the slight back peddling — I think Katt handled himself well during this exchange. Holmes, too, did a good job asking tough questions without being a jerk. What do you guys think? Was Katt’s heckler response racist? (video below) Do you agree with how Williams approached the CNN interview? Does he still owe someone an apology? Let us know in the comments section.
