After lengthy negotiations, NBC has closed a deal on Mixed Blessings, a single-camera comedy project executive produced by prolific singer John Legend and partner Mike Jackson. The two will produce it via their Get Lifted Film Co. banner along with Yellow Brick Road’s Teri Weinberg. Weinberg, a former NBC exec, helped garner interest in the project from several broadcast suitors before entering into exclusive talks with NBC.
She has a great producing pedigree with Ugly Betty and The Tudors on her resume, and she also is still serving as co-executive producer on The Office. This marks the second project backed by an A-list singer NBC has picked up this season; the other is a karaoke-themed comedy show produced by The Voice judge and Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine. Mixed Blessings centers around a street-bred successful African American hip-hop artist who after learning he as a white teenage son in the suburbs embarks on a complicated journey to establish a relationship with him.
