Aside from her stand-up comedy, I’ve come to know and love Wanda Sykes for her work on the always hilarious Curb Your Enthusiasm. She’s a perfect foil for Larry David, whose awkwardness – especially where race is concerned – never fails to cause a whole lot of problems for everyone. Needless to say, given her prolific acting and stand-up career, the news she broke on Ellen today for Monday’s episode came as a surprise to all of us. She revealed that, after a cosmetic breast reduction, she discovered she had breast cancer. The revelation prompted her to opt for a bilateral mastectomy.
“It wasn’t until after the reduction that in the lab work, the pathology, that they found that I had DCIS [ductal carcinoma in situ] in my left breast. I was very, very lucky because DCIS is basically stage-zero cancer. So I was very lucky,” she told Ellen, reports People.
She seems to have taken the decision in stride, reasoning that, “It sounds scary up front, but what do you want? Do you want to wait and not be as fortunate when it comes back and it’s too late?” Strong move from a strong woman – keep on kicking ass, Wanda.
