If you’re the type of person who thinks music videos are dead, especially since MTV and VH1 hardly play them anymore, you’re mostly right. However, celebrated free-form radio host (WFMU’s The Best Show), writer, director, producer and comedy expert Tom Scharpling is bringing back the niche art form — almost single handedly — back from the grave. He actually tells funny stories as opposed to just planting the band or singer in front of different scenery. And since he’s using some of the funniest people in America, Scharpling, with the likes of the Ettes, New Pornographers and Ted Leo has past clients, has turned into a high-demand music video director,

His latest piece, a video for The Stepkids’ “Legend in My Own Mind” features comedian Kurt Braunohler kickin’ it old school and a cameo from comedian and Daily Show correspondent Wyatt Cenac. Check it out below and let us know what you think.

About the Author

Jake Kroeger

Jake Kroeger has dedicated his life, for better or probably worse, to comedy. Starting and continually running the Comedy Bureau, a voice for LA comedy, by himself, he also writes and performs stand-up comedy in LA and watches more live comedy than is probably humanly tolerable. He's been a daily contributor to Punchline Magazine, now because he loves and believes in comedy so much. Said of Kroeger, "...without his dangerously insane, unhealthy work ethic, certain comics would not have any press at all."
