Dave Attell’s new Showtime show combines hardcore porn and comedy

Devotees of early aughts Comedy Central programming have fond memories of a loud, crass man drunkenly gallivanting through strange cities and cracking wise at the seediness that takes place when the sun sets. For four seasons, Insomniac with Dave Attell was the perfect companion for those nights when you found yourself up too late and the seriously weird thoughts start flying around. It was so perfect because Attell, a 20-plus year stand up vet, is the most qualified person to navigate an audience through the most bizarre recesses of their brains, only to get to a well-crafted dick joke.

Since Insomniac’s end, Attell has appeared in small bits on other Comedy Central shows, released his HBO hour special Captain Miserable in 2007 and hosted the Comedy Central’s short-lived revival of The Gong Show— but none of those (minus his special, to a certain extent) played to his most obvious strength: Depravity and weirdness.

But rejoice, fans of Attell! This Thursday marks the beginning of what sounds like the perfect vehicle for his brilliant brand of cringe humor. Dave’s Old Porn premieres on Showtime at 11:30 pm ET. The show will feature Dave and weekly guests (Whitney Cummings and Ron Jeremy on the premiere, pictured above) sitting on a couch and providing commentary to the porn films of the 70’s and 80’s that play behind them in a Mystery Science Theater 3000 type manner.

Joining Attell in future episodes is a slew of great comedians including Daniel Tosh, Jim Norton, Bill Burr, Adam Carolla, Greg Fitzsimmons, Margaret Cho, Jason and Randy Sklar and Chelsea Handler. Also adding commentary will be porn stars new and old such as Belladonna, Bobbi Starr, Nina Hartley, and Sharon Kane. If you know those names, this show is for you.

The show gets stale very fast. The jokes are lame. What could have been an amazing idea loses its impact with Attell and his guests. More porn stars and less lame ass celebs. Whitney Cummings and the Sklar (who the hell are they anyways) brothers were the worst of the bunch. Sad to say I was pumped with the idea but bored to tears at the pathetic execution of this show. The bouncing couch it really annoying. Sorry Dave, you just not that funny. Less Dave Attell, more old time porn stars. BTW, we all know most porn stars are Jewish, you don’t have to remind us every freakin’ episode.

I disagree with with Bored. Attell and guests riff on the movies with expert precision that rival Joel and the bots. I know that’s a little esoteric but the article does mention MST3K. When Attell described one particular female porn star’s short haircut as, “she has that kind of haircut where she is either from the future or Australia.” I could not stop laughing. Don’t listed to Bored, for this show is brilliant.
