UPDATE: The Academy has confirmed that Crystal will host the Oscars.
Unless he’s only joking, it looks like eight-time Oscar host, actor and longtime comedian Billy Crystal will be replacing Eddie Murphy as the Oscar host. Less than 30 minutes ago, Crystal tweeted “Am doing the Oscars so the young woman in the pharmacy will stop asking my name when I pick up my prescriptions. Looking forward to the show.”
Earlier today embattled Tower Heist director Brett Ratner was replaced as Oscars producer by Brian Grazer, who just so happens to be a producer on the same movie. Academy president Tom Sherak made the announcement this morning. “Brian Grazer is a renowned filmmaker who over the past 25 years has produced a diverse and extraordinary body of work,” Sherak said. “he will certainly bring his tremendous talent, creativity and relationships to the Oscars.”
The replacement came shortly after Murphy quit his hosting duties after his buddy, Ratner disgraced the Academy and, by most accounts, was forced to step down as Oscars producer. Last week, Ratner appeared on G4’s Attack of the Show and addressed rumors that back in the day he had sex with Olivia Munn, Attack’s former co-host. In her book, Suck It, Wonder Woman!: The Misadventures of a Hollywood Geek, Munn writes about an unnamed producer she bedded and says some pretty uncomplimentary things about him. So when Ratner was asked whether he was the unnamed producer on Attack of the Show, he admitted he “banged” her a few times but explained that it was before she changed her name to Olivia Munn. A few days later he told Howard Stern that he was just kidding.
