Three days before what would have been Bill Hicks’ 50th birthday, a five-track EP — 12/16/61 (the late comedian’s birthday) — will be released for digital download. Clocking in at 15 minutes and 13 seconds, the collection includes previously unreleased recordings which capture Hicks onstage in Texas (where he grew up) when he was just 21 years old. You can pre-order it now on iTunes.

“Harder to grasp that Bill would be turning 50 and that he has been gone almost 18 years, is the idea that he has reached so many people around the world,” Bill’s brother Steve says about the new release. “Old fans remain fiercely loyal and new fans discover Bill and his work every day. So, appropriately, this is a big Thanks to all of you. Thanks for remembering Bill and thanks for keeping his memory alive. Enjoy this little tidbit from a 21-year-old Bill. Happy Birthday Brother.”

The full tracklist for 12/16/61 looks like this:

Ladies and Gentleman…Bill Hicks
Cats or Dogs
Punks (Where’s the Bone?)
Mick and Keef
Deep Thoughts

Hicks fans can also look forward to Jan. 17. That’s the date last year’s four-disc The Essential Collection will be available digitally– loaded with bonus features, of course.
