Gospel singer Vickie Winans thinks she’s a stand-up comedian (Video)

How talented of a comedian is gospel singer Vickie Winans? I’ll tell you. Tomorrow she’s recording her first ever stand-up comedy DVD. And she has no material prepared. She’s going to do three shows “off the top of my head,” as she tells the below awkward television reporter on a Detroit news show.

But before I totally disparage Winan’s talents as a comedian, it turns out she did released a comedy CD in 1999. It’s called Share The Laughter. (Will begin to disparage now). And I haven’t listened to it, but I’m pretty sure it’s terrible. But what, no doubt, is worse is this interview, wherein she brushes off the concept of stand-up comedy like no effort is required to make a quality stand-up recording. It’s like she was bored and thought, “Hey how about I stand on stage for THREE hours and just say silly shit and make it a DVD! That would be fun, right?” And what’s worse, she only half-jokingly says she might put out a three-volume set if all the shows are good. Anyway, here’s the horrible interview, that I know I should just ignore, but can’t.

Here’s an idea I’m going to pitch. Check it out: Todd Barry live onstage singing gospel songs. For five hours. We record the entire thing — no editing — and release a track on iTunes each day of 2012.

“I haven’t listened to it, but I’m pretty sure it’s terrible.” I do read blogs (and write them), and it’s terrible when writers say shit like this. Give it a whirl and find out or leave out a baseless opinion. Seriously. Plus Vickie Winans comes from a long line of gospel singers with a history of performing. Hell, Dave Grohl could go on stage and riff for an hour and I’d buy that CD. Might not be your cup of tea, but that doesn’t mean it won’t reach a large audience.
