Exclusive: Dane Cook responds to comedians’ harsh reviews of his latest live set

By | January 19, 2012 at 9:39 pm | 109 comments | feature slider, News | Tags: , ,

Dane Cook, the comedian many comedy fans love to hate, has once again come under fire. Last night, he popped in to his home club, the Laugh Factory in Los Angeles for a surprise set. And by some attendees’ accounts, Cook’s working out of new material didn’t sit well.

In fact, fellow comedian T.J. Miller had many things to say. He said, in part, the following:

Last night, [Dane Cook] got on stage and was vicious, misogynistic, cruel, and arrogant. He talked about not paying for an abortion. He talked about finding some whore to fuck to take out his anger at his ex-girlfriend. He talked about how girls would do anything for him ‘because I’m me.’ He got mad when people were texting. ‘Dane Cook is onstage,’ he said. ‘Have some fucking respect.’

The A.V. Club has Miller’s entire account, as well as other harsh words from comedian Daniel Kinno, Late Night with Jimmy Fallon writer Ali Waller and YouTube star Jenna Marbles.

Tonight, Cook responded, telling Laughspin, “I’m back in the stand up octagon after a year off. I’m deeply inspired by various artists I admire. Certainly my friend and one of the great ones Patrice O’Neal passing away has fortified my belief that we, as comedians, all need to share and explore our souls up there — and sometimes our perspective on the whimsical minutia — in order to grow as artists and people.”

“I’ve always felt that comedians can’t be critics,” Cook added, referencing the fact that so many fellow comics had things to say. “They can be critical onstage, but it’s impossible to be both an artist and a critic.”

“That said, I’m thinking T.J. Miller, the A.V. Club and I go on a road trip this weekend. I know a terrific spa in Ojai,” referencing the Ojai Valley Inn & Spa. “Hydrating facials, doubles tennis and a killer 50-minute Expectant Mother’s Massage. My treat. Since I’m really quite rich.”

Even his response is unfunny.  Nice try bringing up Patrice for sympathy.  Awful.  This guy is worse than a politician.

  • Rufus

Also, he says comedians “can be critics on stage, but it’s impossible to be both an artist and a critic.”  That’s a ridiculous statement.  Comedians are critical by nature.  Observational comedy exists because comedians are observing and critiquing everything.

Most comedians that are critics on stage are also critics in real life because their on-stage personas are a glimpse of themselves.  That’s what happens when you write your own material.  It crosses into your real life.  But Dane wouldn’t know anything about that.

I’m not defending what Cook did.  But why do people have to write a blog about it.  TJ Miller was there.  Tell him to his face.  I think referencing Patrice was fair.  Patrice did that all the time and everyone loved him for it.

      Patrice did what, serious misogyny?
Patrice pulled off something pretty unique, in part because he was prepared to sacrifice his own image/ego 100%, in part because he was just talented like that, and in part because, yeah, a lot of people still kinda hate women. Dane Cook is missing two out of three here. Also, Patrice did a lot of racist stuff, but does anyone else really think that gives them license to go up and half-improvise hateful tirades against different ethnic groups? Remember Michael Richards?

      • EvilMuppet

Yes in fact Patrice did spout “serious misogyny” as you put it, take some time and listen to every other show he did on Opie and Anthony. It was funny and I’m not condemning it by any means but he stated several times that he hated women, and not just kinda half hated them but Really hated them while loving them at the same time. Another point you’ve gotten wrong is that Dane Cook and Patrice were not friends when in fact they came up together, they grinded it out in the same shitty clubs on the same bills in the early 90′s. They were in fact very close as evidenced by the fact that Dane was one of the first people Von (Patrice’s wife) called when he passed (after family of course). And as far as the whole Micheal Richards thing goes Patrice was far from being the only person who stood up for him, I can personally think of 12 comics who pubically came out in his defense. I can tell by the tone of your comment that you enjoyed Patrice’s comedy and are only sticking up for his memory which is why I wrote this response, but please read and learn more about Patrice before you comment.

        • Marie Kersey

It should have been very clear that I knew Patrice’s comedy from my comment. Read it again.

Wow. That really cleared things up for me. Now I love Dane Cook even more than I did before. Not only is he a nice, caring, and thoughtful person who clearly has a respect and love for all people, but he’s well spoken and sincere.

To be clear, all of that was sarcasm. I used to think he was funny and charming. It’s awful to hear that his downward spiral in life as spewed out onto his fans and audiences. For his own sake and health, I hope he gets help and is able to pick up the pieces.

And if Patrice’s death truly affected him, maybe he should think about showing some respect in that arena, as well.

    • Brentwoodholmes

All of that because a comic got bumped, and his set failed? Do any of you fuckfaces go to comedy clubs regularly?!?! And no, I’m not a Dane Cook fan. There are a lot of comics I don’t find funny. I simply watch the ones I like.

Dude get the fuck off your high horse. Seriously you being the biggest douche at the commenting party and we are fucking sick of it. We get it you tried to be a comedian and failed, thus you resort to trying to demean people for not knowing how the “show” works. Dane BOMBED and does not give a fuck at all and thinks that people will put up with his shit because he is “motherfuckin Dane Cook”. Well he is wrong because he is in the entertainment business and he is not entertaining anyone by telling people how he chainsaw fucked a dirty hooker. Just because Dane Cook was great before does not mean that he is great now.

Its just a bunch of sensitive LA people being uptight. Are you suprised?

I think the thing is Dane is trying to be start a new image for himself and attempt to be an angry bitter east coast comedian like his other comedy pals are (Patrice, Bob Kelly, Jim Norton, Bill Burr, ect.) but he really just needs to stick to his old act.

I actually like Dane Cooks response here. Ha, serves as a big eff you to all the dopes that think comedians have to be politically correct for fear of offending some sensitive little bitch that doesn’t understand that comedy and the content that comedians choose to talk about should have no boun thatdries. People hate Cook because it’s the popular thing to do. I think he is funny as hell and hope this material ends up in a new set that is utterly deplorable and offensive to all of his “critics”. Oh, you guys should take him up on his offer to go to the spa. Haha.

It’s a little shitty to shit on someone publicly after getting bumped about their material that didn’t work. The audience gave him the feedback he needed (this ain’t funny) or they laughed (which we, not being in the room, have no idea). This all seems like a technique to get career boost.

I would much rather have seen TJ write a successful joke about it that he performed than tweet about it. If you replace “Dane Cook” with “Your favorite comedian that hasn’t been as successful lately as they once were.” Would any of the other commentators feel the same? But, it looks like TJ wins, he created buzz by shitting on someone. Now, if Dane Cook ever catches TJ bombing and tweets about it…we should compare the vitriol that spews forth from the uninformed masses.

I’m late (very) to this whole thing, but I must comment. I can see both sides of the issue, in a way. But I rest fully and happily with TJ Miller on this. Cook showing up and taking over the stage for over an hour and unleashing nasty, unfunny, mean-spirited material on an unsuspecting audience just kills the night for the rest of the comics and punishes the audience for no good reason.

Also, “They can be critical onstage, but it’s impossible to be both an artist and a critic.” sounds like an intelligent, thoughtful thing to say but in reality it makes no sense. Everyone is a critic. Artists SHOULD BE critics. It’s how you develop an idea of what’s important to you and what you want to avoid. Now, a VOCAL critic? Whatever. This wasn’t about material, it was about Cook being King D-Bag.

Plus, the “I’m really quite rich” is just the sort of defensive, shallow, utterly meaningless response one would expect from Cook.
