Poll: Do the stars of ‘The Hangover’ deserve $15 million each for the third movie?

Reports surfaced this week that the stars of the uber-popular Hangover comedy franchise — Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms and Zach Galifianakis — were demanding $15 million each for their services in a third installment, which stalled contract negotiations with Warner Bros. The second Hangover offering (released last year) took in more than $580 million worldwide with each of the stars making around $5 million. The original Hangover from 2009 banked $470 million worldwide, with each of its stars reportedly making slightly less than $1 million.

So the question is…

Do the stars of 'The Hangover' deserve $15 million each for the third movie?

Zach et al. are fully aware that these movies are turds; asking for 15 mil each is awesome because they know that A: The studio needs them to appear in it in order to be successful, B: they don’t NEED the work, and C: It’s no secret that these films are absurdly profitable. Why not make the suits squirm a little?

Dear Mike N:  The world economy will not be affected in any way by the amount of money these guys get paid.  Warner Bros is the corporation that profits from The Hangover series and Warner Bros is signing the actors’ checks.  So, for example, instead of Warner Bros earning $200 million in profit, the company would only pocket $140 million, with the other $60 million going to the actors.  But, in the end, it’s still a total of $200 million.  What do you suggest?  You think these “assclowns” should each make $10 grand and Warner Bros can walk away with $199,996,000?  Yeah.  Right.  When you don’t understand economics, it’s very easy to think that life isn’t fair.  But, you need to know that your opinion is fueled by ignorance, not justice or intelligence.

I think they should take what they can get. I just hope they do a “Louis CK” and give some of it back… Otherwise: They are artists, a naturally underpaid species and if some of them get a break: Good for them!

NO ONE “deserves” $15 million for making a movie, any movie, no matter what function they perform in creating the movie.  That said, if they can get it, why not?  Those who as a result will get less than they might have can most definitely afford the lost share, and the actors will be in that much better of a position to do something they love somewhere down the line – whether it’s a tiny, cheap film, or supporting a good cause, or even spending all of their time with their kids.

Okay, okay…In order for the studios to pay them 15 million dollars, they better have a damn good script. Smart move by the fellas. Hangover 2 was widely known as worse than the first, so why not call the studios bluff?

Deserve is a stupid word when talking business. The people financing this movie have to decide if the 45 million fits into a viable budget.  If you want to talk about the oligarchy of the studio system, that’s a different conversation.
