The documentary American Masters Johnny Carson: King of Late Night is set to premiere May 14 on PBS. In this preview, members of The Tonight Show — writer Raymond Siller, musician Doc Severinsen, talent coordinator Paul Block — and Conan O’Brien remember what it was like to watch Carson perform. “[The Tonight Show] was like a show business cathedral and Johnny was the king,” says Block. I was only a kid when Carson was on.  I’ve got great memories of being allowed to stay up on Friday nights to watch Johnny Carson and all those fantastic guests.  I had day dreams of one day being famous and appearing on his show.  Carson was so cool!
