In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Tina Fey discussed the upcoming Emmy awards, her wish list for 30 Rock’s final season, and what it’s like to watch Liz Lemon finally grow up. Even though the show and Fey have received numerous awards in the past and endless critical acclaim, the star of the show still says, “It’s super fun if you win. I mean, it’s super duper fun.” She adds, “I also think there are people like Jane Krakowski — who’s done such good work for so many years– who are truly funny … I would be so delighted if she were recognized.”
The bizarre sitcom has operated every season as if it were the last, resulting in the hilarious, bold and unique character that we’ll miss after the upcoming final season. “Because we lived in fear, or freedom from fear,” Fey told EW, “of getting canceled for so long, anything weird we wanted to do, we went ahead and did it.”
As weird as it’s been, Fey’s beloved Liz Lemon has made a profound impact on the hearts of fans. The actress reflected on the changes to Lemon’s scattered, loveless, work-obsessed life that went down in season six. “Liz finally tells her boyfriend, Criss (James Marsden), ‘I love you’… You want the characters to grow but they can’t grow too quickly, so six years in, Liz has finally made some emotional growth, and for me, I thought that was a nice story and a nice moment for the character,” but the 30 Rock flair was not washed out by sap. “I also as an actress was very happy that I got to wear large oversize Hulk hands in this big romantic scene,” Fey added.
After watching and wondering through almost the entire series whether we’ll get to see Liz as a mother, might we get it in Season 7? “I think the last 13 will be about her road, potentially, to motherhood,” Fey shared. “Now that we know that we’re going to be done, it feels nice” to let Liz finally grow up, Fey said. “It’ll be nice to have some more good things happen to her,” whether that includes motherhood or not.
“We’re not too worried about creating some ginormous arc,” Fey said of finding closure in the final season. “Eventually — hopefully — these episodes will live in syndication out of order and they’ll still be enjoyable. Tonally, our show has swung such a wide pendulum that I don’t think it’ll feel like, ‘Oh, Roseanne won the lottery’ because we’ve already done so many weird things.”
Checking off her Season 7 bucket list will be long-awaited guest stars and re-appearances by favorite characters. “I always wanted to get Michael Benjamin Washington back … Of course we want to get Dennis Duffy in at some point. I’d love to get Michael Sheen to come back as Wesley Snipes. I’d love to get Isabella Rossellini back … she was a very pivotal character once. I tried to tell Salma Hayek that she has to come back. She said that she would, and I’m going to hold her to that.”
And what won’t be checked off the bucket list? “I always wanted to do a full-tilt Bugsy Malone episode. But I don’t think we’ll get to that in the final 13.”
