The Office’s Ed Helms is in negotiations to star in a remake of the classic Vacation films, planned by New Line Cinema.

Helms will play a grown-up Rusty Griswold, the son of Clark Griswold (Chevy Chase) and Ellen Griswold (Beverly D’Angelo) from the original films, who, in the reboot will be embarking on a vacation with his own family. It’s interesting to note that Rusty has been played by five different actors.

The project will start shooting next spring after Helms finishes The Office, reports the Hollywood Reporter. “John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein are directing the project, which plays like both a sequel and a reboot of [the original],” writes Borys Kit.

The talk of a new Vacation has been bouncing around since 2009. And last summer, Chase said that he was writing a new Vacation script, but who knows how serious he was.

So, our big question: will Chevy Chase have anything to do with the project? After all, in March, the movie’s producers said they wanted both Chase and Beverly D’Angelo back for the new flick.
