The wife of Caleb Medley, a Denver comic who was critically injured and placed in a medically induced coma after getting shot in the face during the Dark Knight Rises massacre, gave birth to the couple’s first child earlier today. A message on Medley’s Facebook fan page reads, “Hugo Jackson Medley was born today at 0711. Katie and Hugo are doing well. Thank you all for the love, prayers, and support!”
Katie made arrangements to switch the hospital in which she had planned to deliver so that she would be in the same center as Medley. It’s a bittersweet situation, of course, as Katie gave birth while Hugo’s father was in a hospital bed. Although Medley lost his right eye and has suffered brain damage, good friend Mike West told the Associated Press that although he’s still attached to a ventilator, he’s beginning to breathe on his own and can squeeze people’s hands.
Because the couple is not insured, the hospital bills — possibly $2 million worth — will be paid out of pocket. And that’s why West has set up a site where people can donate funds to help defray the family’s costs. As of this writing, nearly $164,000 has been raised. Similarly, Warner Bros., the studio behind the newest Batman film donated money to the victims who attended the midnight screening on July 20. Co-producers Legendary Pictures also donated.
The suspect, 24-year-old James Holmes is accused of killing 12 people and injuring 58 others in the Aurora, CO shooting.
