HBO has picked up Hello Ladies, a pilot from Stephen Merchant, co-creator with Ricky Gervais of the British The Office. The would star Merchant as an Englishman who has relocated to Los Angeles in hopes of joining the ranks of the rich, famous and beautiful. The problem, however, is that group of folks see no room for our protagonist in their clique.
Merchant’s character is focused on finding the woman of his dreams but is set back by his less than charming personality as well as his desperation and lack of tact, according to Deadline. Hello Ladies, also the title of Merchant’s stand-up special which focuses on the same themes, was written with former Office writers Lee Eisenberg and and Gene Stupnitsky. The duo previously co-wrote Bad Teacher, which starred Cameron Diaz.
