Although it had been assumed Adam McKay would direct the flick he’s already producing, it turns out that actor, writer (and Jennifer Aniston’s boyfriend) Justin Theroux will assume directing duties for the Warner Bros comedy, Swear To God, starring Will Ferrell and Steve Carrell. The movie is about a self-centered hedge fund manager (Ferrell) who thinks he has seen God…and that’s all we know right now. Carrell could play a nemesis, sidekick, love interest, or anything really. Until further details are released we’ll keep hypothesizing.
Theroux has previously directed a few smaller movies, but Swear to God will be his first big directing gig. Deadline adds that signing Theroux on as director for a major comedy is a surprising move on Warner Bros part because they don’t normally give directing deals to people with such minimal directing experience. Theroux previously wrote Tropic Thunder and Zoolander 2 (which he is also rumored to be directing). And get this: in addition to directing Swear To God, Theroux is also rewriting the script, originally penned by the duo behind Due Date, Alan Cohen and Alan Freedland.
