For the last few weeks, we’ve been keeping you updated on Caleb Medley, a young comedian in Colorado, who barely escaped death after getting shot during the July 20 Dark Kight Rises massacre, which claimed the lives of 12 moviegoers and injured 58 others. Four days later, Medley’s wife Katie — who escaped the shooting — gave birth to the couple’s son, Hugo. On July 30, a judge levied 142 charges against the alleged shooter, James Holmes, including 24 counts of first-degree murder.

Today, comedian Vilmos, a close friend of Medley sent an update to subscribers of, explaining Medley’s status:

Caleb has slowly been stabilizing and improving the last three days. Today he was breathing on his own for most of the day, he is maintaining his own temperature now, and there are no signs of infections at this time. Caleb is scheduled to get his tracheostomy on Monday, and a feeding tube into his tummy early next week. So there will be no more tubes in his throat. Also, his brain is still giving off quite a bit of drainage, but the doctors say this is completely manageable. Things are starting to improve, but he is not out of the woods yet.

One of the missions of is to raise $500,000 for Medley’s hospital bills, which could easily reach $2 million. Medley does not have insurance. As of this writing, more than $378,000 has been raised. There’s also been multiple live comedy shows organized around the country to raise money for Medley and his family. If you wish to give, please go here and do what you can. Every little bit helps.
