Godfather of the mockumentary Christopher Guest has gotten the green light from HBO for a new series called Family Tree. Guest will serve as the director, and will co-write the series with his frequent collaborator Jim Piddock.

The single-camera mockumentary, reports Deadline, stars the endlessly likeable and hilarious Chris O’Dowd, who starred in Channel 4’s The IT Crowd and more recently in Bridesmaids and in two episodes of HBO’s Girls. O’Dowd plays a 30-something who has recently lost his job and girlfriend, and is suffering from an identity crisis. His character begins to investigate his unusual and mysterious family lineage. Guest and Piddock will appear on the show as well.

Details are still being worked out – the show is still casting — but eight episodes are expected. In addition to its home on HBO the show will also air in the UK on BBC Two .
