Modern Family’s Julie Bowen leads campaign to increase awareness of life threatening allergies

On the heels of her Emmy win for best supporting actress in a comedy, not to mention the season premiere of her hit show last night, Modern Family star Julie Bowen has teamed up with pharmaceutical company Mylan to address the increasing number of severe allergy cases. The Get Schooled in Anaphylaxis initiative is geared toward children in grades one through 12 and will focus on educating those communities about anaphylaxis, a life-threatening allergic reaction.

The cause is close to Bowen’s heart since her now-five-year-old son had a near-death experience when he was a toddler, before she knew he was allergic to peanuts, walnuts and bee stings. “Fortunately, my son received immediate medical care and recovered quickly,” Bowen says, “but it was a wake-up call that anaphylaxis can occur anywhere and at any time, even when you may not think your child is at risk.”
