NBC orders more ‘Guys with Kids’ despite poor ratings, still no word on ‘Community’

When NBC kicked freshman series Animal Practice to the curb last week, and replaced it with the second season of Whitney, I thought fellow first-year effort Guys With Kids (which was scoring only infinitesimally better ratings than Animal Practice) would follow and — alas — Community‘s fourth season would begin where the stuck-in-the-1950s-themed sitcom (What??? Men taking care of kids?) once stood. But, oh, how fucking wrong I was. NBC has ordered five more scripts for the series, starring Anthony Anderson, Zach Cregger, Jesse Bradford, Jamie-Lynn Sigler, Tempestt Bledsoe and Erinn Hayes.

Did I mention Jimmy Fallon produces Guys With Kids? Yeah, so that might have something to do with its extended life even though, as The Hollywood Reporter points out, it recently posted ratings only three-tenths higher than the deceased animal vet comedy. Community was scheduled to premiere on Friday, Oct. 19 at 8:30 pm ET, right after the new season of Whitney. But that was before the network pulled the plug and left it dangling. So far, the cast of the cult favorite has been dealing with being jerked around with a great sense of humor.

Is anyone else completely perplexed over the decisions being made at NBC?

part of me hopes this is a slow, underground attempt at a buildup for Community by NBC. create hype for the show by people writing about how it’s being screwed around to create a bigger audience once it officially debuts. only sadly, i don’t think NBC is that smart. i’ve actually attempted to watch new shows that are on the air right now and can barely get past the first 5 minutes. Joel McHale on Sons Of Anarchy will have to do for now i guess.
