I love when our readers leave their homes to support live stand-up comedy, but tonight I’m strongly suggesting you stay in, sit on your couch and watch the premiere of Jim Jefferies’ newest stand-up special Fully Functional. It’s going down at 10 pm EST on Epix. And having seen an advanced copy, I can tell you it’s worth an hour of your time. You can check out an exclusive preview below.

If you’ve been following the steadily-rising Aussie comic, you might know that he’s also set to make his television series debut next year, when he’ll star on Legit, a single-camera production for FX that follows the life of a hard living man trying to get his life on the straight and narrow. I chatted with Jefferies yesterday (briefly, as he was on set and about to get his makeup done) to see how things were progressing.

“We’ve already shot five episodes. This is my first real acting gig,” Jefferies tells Laughspin, “so it’s a little intimidating working with real, experienced actors,” alluding to the rest of his cast, which includes DJ Qualls (Road Trip, Hustle & Flow) and Mindy Sterling who played Frau Farbissina in all three Austin Powers movies. Jefferies also tells us John Ratzenberger of Cheers and Toy Story fame is joining the cast!

As if headlining his own new sitcom wasn’t enough pressure excitement, Jefferies’ girlfriend is set to give birth to the couple’s son in early November. “We only knew each other for a few months when she got pregnant,” he says. “I think our one-year anniversary is on the day the baby is due.”

Throughout his previous two comedy specials and DVDs I Swear to God and Alcoholocaust, Jefferies has regaled us with amazing stories of his deviant bachelor life, detailed reenactments of his X-Rated misadventures and his astute and crude observations of the people around us. But clearly, the comedian is at a crossroads in 2012.

“I like having a girlfriend,” he says. “It’s good to have something grounded at the moment. I don’t know if people are going to like or hate [Legit]. I think it’s good. But it’s nice to have a little normality for once.”

But will his altered station in life effect his stand-up, the thing that’s endeared him to thousands of comedy fans who gravitate toward his brutally honest version of life?

“I feel like I’m still the same,” he says. “I’ve been traveling around the world for the last 10 years. I bought a house and I’m pretty happy. But I don’t think that’s going to effect my stand-up too much.”

Watch Jim Jefferies: Fully Functional tonight on Epix at 10 pm EST. If you don’t have Epix, sign up here for a free online trial, where you can stream the special right now.
