You’ve probably heard by now that hugely popular, if not divisive, former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher died today at the age of 87 after suffering a stroke, one of a series she endured during the last years of her life. While I’m sad to hear about her passing, I couldn’t help but immediately think about George Carlin’s mention of Thatcher during his “Things You Never See” bit on his 1990 album Parental Advisory, the first album of Carlin’s I ever heard– and the one that made me fall in love with his work. I should also mention that it was the first time I ever heard of Margaret Thatcher. So, as is the case with a lot of my education, I learned a little about history from a comedian. Here’s how that joke played out:
You’d never see a guy jogging down the street listening to a ‘Shitman.’ No, that’s one of those things you never see. There’s a lot of things you never see and you don’t know you don’t see ’em because you don’t see ’em. You gotta see something first to know you never saw it. Then you see it and say, ‘Hey, I never saw that.’ Too late, you just saw it. I know things you never see. You never a Rolls-Royce with a bumper sticker that says ‘Shit happens.’ You never a really big, tall, fat Chinese guy with red hair. You never see a wheelchair with a roll bar. You never see someone taking a shit while running at full speed. And you never see a picture of Margaret Thatcher strapping on a dildo.
