ABC today announced its upcoming fall schedule— and with it, five shiny new comedies starring the likes of Jeff Garlin, Rebel Wilson and Malin Akerman. Since Mondays on ABC will be all about the drama, we’ll skip to Tuesdays, which finds two new comedies – The Goldbergs at 9 pm and Trophy Wife at 9:30 pm – sandwiched between two dramas (Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Lucky 7).
The Goldbergs is a family comedy that takes place in the ‘80s and stars Jeff Garlin and Wendi McClendon-Covey (Reno 911!, Bridesmaids) as parents of a teen-age son and daughter and a geeky 11-year-old boy who constantly films the family with a camcorder. The show – produced by Adam Sandler’s company Happy Madison – is already drawing comparisons to The Wonder Years, especially since it employs a narrator: Patton Oswalt! Following The Goldbergs is The Trophy Wife, which stars Malin Akerman (Childrens Hospital) as a reformed party girl who marries Pete (Bradley Whitford), who has two ex-wives, played by Marcia Gay Harden and Michaela Watkins.
Returning series The Middle kicks off Wednesday night at 8 pm and is followed by Back in the Game, which stars James Caan (a “beer-guzzling ex-athlete”) as Maggie Lawson’s estranged father. An ex-jock, herself, Lawson’s character ends up coaching a team of terrible Little Leaguers, one of which is her not-so-athletic son, Danny. The returning and massively successful Modern Family follows, acting as an amazing lead-in for Super Fun Night, co-produced by Conan O’Brien. It stars Rebel Wilson (Pitch Perfect) as a junior attorney whose recent promotion messes up the 13-year-old tradition she and her two best girlfriends have, which demands the trio hang out every Friday night without actually going anywhere.
Thursday is all cut-up bodies, hot people in suits and fantasyland stuff. And Friday boasts only two comedies, the returning Last Man Standing and underrated The Neighbors. The final new comedy is Mixology – about a crew of twenty-somethings who hang out at Union, a hip bar in New York City. It’s not yet on the schedule so one has to assume it’ll debut midseason.
