Graduation season has come and gone, which means commencement speeches have been cropping up all over the Internet. There were the politicians, the academicians, the authors and the entertainers, most of whom opened the grab bag of motivational cliches and plucked out a few that would resonate with this year’s classes. But Anders Holm (Workaholics, The Mindy Project) went a different route.

Speaking at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the ’03 alum skipped the fancy words, and the quotes from Shakespeare or the Dalai Lama, instead speaking plainly and genuinely about the years it might take to achieve what you want, the need to figure out your purpose, and how you can say dumb things, but “if you say it slowly, in a cool robe, it will sound more smarter.” Check out the full speech below and watch our 12 favorite graduations speeches from years past, including ones from Amy Poehler, Tina Fey, Will Ferrell and Fred Armisen!
