Using the highly rated Game of Thrones season finale as a platform to promote Stephen Merchant’s upcoming series Hello Girls, HBO unveiled the first teaser last night.

The show follows Merchant — Ricky Gervais’ writing partner — as an awkward Englishman who tries desperately to ingratiate himself into the cutthroat world of dating in Los Angeles. The problem, of course, is that Merchant isn’t half as charming as he thinks and comes off twice as desperate.Merchant created the show with with The Office writers Gene Stupnitsky and Lee Eisenberg. The eight series run will debut Sept. 29 on HBO.

To prove just how awkward he really is, watch as Merchant and his wingman Wade (Nate Torrence) try to pick up two ladies at a bar.
