chappelle at jfl 400When organizers at the Just For Laughs comedy festival announced Dave Chappelle would be performing one show at this year’s festival in Montreal, comedy fans went nuts. When tickets went on sale, they were gone within minutes.

Eventually nine more shows were added. By the end of last week – the festival ended Sunday – Chappelle had sold 14,221 tickets, breaking the 31-year-old festival’s record for most tickets sold.

Next up for Chappelle: He’ll co-headline the Oddball Comedy & Curiosity Festival along with Flight of the Conchords starting on Aug. 23 through Sept. 22. He’ll be joined be the likes of Jeff Ross, Al Madrigal, Demetri Martin, Hannibal Buress and more. And of course, there’s always the possibility of that long-rumored live stand-up tour with Chris Rock. Fingers crossed.

Left to right: Robbie Praw (Just For Laughs General Programming Director), Bruce Hills  (Just For Laughs COO), Rick Greenstein (The Gersh Agency), Dave Chappelle and Gilbert Rozon (founder of Just For Laughs/Juste pour rire)
