We reported last week that stand-up comedian Taylor Williamson became one of the last six finalists left on NBC’s America’s Got Talent. Last night, in another nailbiting season finale, the nationwide talent show has crowned another $1 million winner. Last night, 26-year old stand-up comedian Taylor Williamson stood onstage next to dancer Kenichi Ebina as one of the two finalists on the live episode. Just as we saw comic Tom Cotter voted second place last year, Williamson came up a few votes shy of the cash prize and headlining contract in Las Vegas.
This season was intense for the Los Angeles-based comic, especially on Tuesday night’s final performance when the producers demanded that he do the same jokes he did previously on the show. “Comedy doesn’t work like that! You can’t do the same joke twice!” he jokingly complained on Tuesday night’s episode. However, he was able to put a new spin on his same adorably sexual animal jokes and win the audience over to make it to the Top Two. Williamson will still appear on the America’s Got Talent Live show in Las Vegas this Fall and Winter, as will the other finalists. Williamson was gifted an unofficial prize as well– a kiss on the lips from supermodel Heidi Klum. After the finale, Williamson posted the below photo with the message, “So it turns out 2nd place isn’t that bad.”
His popularity on the highly-rated NBC series is great for the artform of stand-up comedy, proving network executives respect the craft after having a comedian voted runner-up by the public in two consecutive years. If this trend continues, it may not be long before we see stand-up comedy showcases return to network television for the first time since Last Comic Standing ended in 2010. Congratulations to Williamson for his success and congratulations to Kenichi Ebina on the big win. Watch Taylor’s final set from Tuesday night and the intense announcement of the winner below.
