Comedy Central has announced a premiere date for its newest entry into the late-night talk show market. Chris Hardwick’s @midnight will debut on Oct. 21 at midnight EST. Hardwick’s part-talk show/part-faux game show will run Monday through Thursday, extending Comedy Central’s late-night block as he follows The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and The Colbert Report.

Produced by Funny or Die, @midnight will feature a rotation of top stand-up comics “battling” each other to see who has the funniest take on the day’s top social media postings and pop culture events. Expect Twitter tantrums, bizarre Yahoo! Answers, and absurd Instagram treasures. The series plans to have a built-in, interactive experience for viewers who are invited to respond to the show on Twitter. Some of the comedians scheduled to appear are Kumail Nanjiani, Kurt Braunohler and Natasha Leggero.

The announcement shows a strategic move by Comedy Central. Hardwick already has a loyal fan base from his Nerdist Podcast (and podcast network), live stand-up appearances and live after-shows Talking Dead and Talking Bad. The network ensures him a strong lead-in audience by placing him after Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert. The Oct. 21 date also has him premiere one week before The Pete Holmes Show, which is also a half-hour midnight talk show with a stand-up host. That show will debut debuts Oct. 28 on TBS.
