What do you think about Melissa McCarthy on the cover of Elle? (Poll)

This week lady-centric magazine Elle released its annual Women in Hollywood Issue. As is the protocol, Elle created multiple covers for home subscribers. And this year, Mike & Molly star, The Heat co-star and Bridesemaids standout Melissa McCarthy is one of five cover stars; Reese Witherspoon, Shailene Woodley, Marion Cotillard, Penelope Cruz and Naomie Harris join her. And while it’s seemingly a huge win for the comedy world to have someone like McCarthy to grace the cover of a well-respected, national monthly, some are not happy because of the magazine’s decision to dress her in a large coat.

“Perhaps photographer Thomas Whiteside only knows how to photograph the usual stick insect models, because he clearly has no clue how to highlight McCarthy’s curves,” writes Slate critic June Thomas.

Celebrity psychotherapist Stacy Kaiser told Fox News: “This shows that the fashion world is trying to strike the balance between featuring full-figured women, while still hiding them as well.”

“Times have changed. Fashion has changed,” former model Cynthia Bailey said of the cover. ”I just immediately thought, ‘What a missed opportunity to represent all the curvy girls of the world.’”

However, McCarthy, herself, doesn’t see what the big to-do is. “[Elle is] a magazine I grew up with and I hadn’t done anything quite like that,” she said. “I was nervous… It was kind of amazing.” Plus, reps for the comedian said McCarthy chose the coat for the shoot.

“Comedians shouldn’t be on the cover of magazines like Elle because it cheapens the art form.”

I think this is a big win. I do wish she wan’t all wrapped up in a coat, but at least there’s a smart, funny woman on a cover of a fashion magazine.
