Into the Wild actor Emile Hirsch has been cast as the legendary John Belushi in the upcoming untitled biopic from Steve Conrad. The movie will focus on the heights of Belushi’s fame, so expect to see Hirsch in the Blues Brothers suit and Animal House toga. Covering his larger-than-life personality and career, the film will also include his unexpected overdose of cocaine and heroin in 1982, which led to his death at the horriffically young age of 33.

The biopic is produced by the Saturday Night Live alum’s high school sweetheart and widow, Judy Belushi Pisano. Close friend and castmate Dan Aykroyd will have a hand in the film as executive producer. The script was adapted from the 2005 biography, Belushi, written by Pisano and Tanner Colby.

It is refreshing to see a comedian biopic greenlit for shooting, as many other projects have teased us while stuck in development hell. Some, like the Sam Kinison biopic sporadically have life breathed into them. Others, like long-talked projects about Bill Hicks and Richard Pryor, see no new developments.

Hirsch and crew will being filming in New York City this upcoming spring.
