Will CNN president Jeff Zucker truly shake things up at the 24-hour news channel by inserting a comedy news show? That’s the word on the street since New York Post’s Page 6 said over the weekend that CNN might be developing a show in the style of The Daily Show when Bill Weir joins them in November. Weir, the former Nightline host, announced earlier this month that he was leaving ABC News to join CNN. He’s planned to anchor a one-hour show that has not yet been announced. The Post also reported that CNN had attempted to hire John Oliver, but that the Daily Show correspondent is still under contract with Comedy Central.
Many studies point out that most young people get their actual news from Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert moreso than from actual news anchors or newspapers. The move would be a risky one, as Weir is not even a comedian. With the right host and format, a comedy news show could be a hit that lures younger viewers to CNN. But don’t hold your breath for this just yet. A source commented that it is too early to know what Weir will do. “[He] hasn’t even joined CNN yet. He doesn’t start until November.”
