For the right price, fans of the cult hit Anchorman will have an opportunity to see its sequel before everyone else. Paramount Pictures, AMC Theaters, and Fandange collectively announced to exclusively offer a “superticket” for Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues on November 26. These “superfans” better also have a “superwallet” because the ticket will likely be more than double or triple the usual cost of admission.
Paramount ran a successful “mega ticket” campaign with its release of World War Z in June. People who paid $50 for this platinum package at Regal theaters saw the film ahead of its release, received a free digital download of the film after its DVD launch, received custom 3D glasses, and walked home with a special movie poster. The Brad Pitt-led zombie flick ended up grossing over $202 million in the United States.
Paramount has not yet announced how much it will cost folks to see Will Ferrell before their friends at work do, nor have they announced any of the perks other than being able to see their favorite San Diego news team two days early on December 18. People who register on the film’s website will be the first to hear the full details about the offer. The move may be an attempt to get some insurance dollars back early on a film that took Paramount the better part of a decade to greenlight, even though the original grossed over $85 million at the box office alone (it’s in the top 100 most popular DVDs on Amazon today).
The long-awaited sequel will be in theaters nationwide on December 20 at regular ticket prices.
