Tom Hathaway (right) faces this exact problem. Tom is an aspiring stand-up and the younger brother of actress Anne Hathaway. Rumors have been circulating that the Les Miserables star is pregnant after marrying her husband Adam Schulman. The reports came because of an alleged joke that her brother told at a comedy show in Brooklyn on Oct. 30. Apparently, someone told Star that “Tom opened his act by talking about Anne’s personal life. He said, ‘My sister got married last year, and now she is about to be a new mom!'” Anne’s reps have denied the pregnancy rumors.
“I’ve had a bad week of getting my words misinterpreted by the press,” the 26-year old exclusively tells Laughspin. “In the joke, I mentioned her as my sister, not as ‘Anne Hathaway.’ Some of the audience members knew who I was related to and one of them went to the press.”
Tom, who is fairly new to stand-up and has only been doing it for about a year, is trying to cut his teeth like any other hard working comedian. He primarily performs at open mikes and free bar shows in New York City. Tom claims he never said that his sister was expecting. The joke was, in his words, “My sister got married somewhat recently and it was a lovely wedding. But I realized during the ceremony that one day, I’m going to be Uncle Tom.” One day. Not one day nine months from now.
Normally when a comedian’s joke is misinterpreted, it starts a controversy over the N-word, sexism or homophobia. It’s not every day that a comic begins a pregnancy rumor. Tom didn’t think this was how he’d first get his name out there. “This is by far the most press I’ve ever gotten as a comedian, albeit in exactly the way I feared it would happen.”
Tom will be talking about the ordeal this Saturday at the Pine Box Rock Shop in Brooklyn at 8pm. When asked off the record if the Dark Knight Rises actress was actually pregnant, he responded, “Nope, not pregnant. And you can put that on the record.”
