For most of the world’s Christian population – practicing or otherwise – Christmas is an incredibly exciting time of the year. It’s a time for family and friends to come together and celebrate what’s right with the world. And it’s a time to spend a bunch of money you don’t have on a bunch of crap no one wants or needs. For some, Christmas memories have been cemented through song. Iconic Christmas carols like “Jingle Bells,” “Silent Night” and “Frosty the Snowman” are embedded in our brains and jump to the front of our gray matter every December. And it seems everywhere we go, some coffee shop, retail store or Asian massage parlor is rockin’ out to Bing Crosby, Dean Martin or Nat King Cole.
But this year is different (and better), especially for comedy fans. And you can thank comedian Kyle Dunnigan for that. On Dec. 10, the Inside Amy Schumer scribe will release his own Christmas album. To be precise, Craig, his popular serial killer character from Reno 911! will be releasing a Christmas album. It’s called Craig’s All Star, Rockin’ Christmas, You Guys! And we’re please to premiere an exclusive track, right here on Laughspin. It’s called “My Baby Lamb Has Christmas Cancer” and it’ll bring a tear to your eye. Check it out below.
I asked Dunnigan this week why he decided to release a Christmas album — you can pre-order here — as opposed to a straight-up stand-up album. “Well, Christmas was coming up and I wanted to make something and for a few years I thought it would be funny for my character Craig to do Christmas songs,” Dunnigan tells Laughspin. “And a friend of mine, Jim Roach, who’s a really good producer, expressed interest in doing that. And then we started working on songs, doing other characters.”
If you listened above, you’ll note that Paul McCartney dropped in on that tune. Dunnigan also unleashes impressions of Tim Gunn, Donald Trump, Bill Maher and Craig’s brother Kurt, who stars in his own video for the track “Fuck You, Mistletoe” (watch below).
Before talking with Dunnigan I wasn’t aware that Craig existed years before Reno 911! “I had been doing that character for years,” he says. “I have pictures of myself at nine years old doing that face.”
In case it wasn’t already obvious from the two songs above, the album is warped, to say the least. One song, titled “Santa’s Stuck Up In Our Chimney and We Can’t Find Our Dad,” features Amy Schumer and her sister. “It’s not a very good Christmas album,” Dunnigan says. “It’s not a family Christmas album. I think it’s the dirtiest Christmas album ever made. Don’t give it to the kids.”
