What’s the proper amount of time a movie studio should wait to reboot a popular franchise after the original star’s death? Well, if you’re Paramount, the answer is three years. It’s true, comedy fans. Ed Helms is officially the new Lieutenant Frank Drebin, Variety reports. Powerhouse comedy writing duo Thomas Lennon and R. Ben Garant of Reno 911! fame, will write the new screenplay.

It’s been 19 years since the last installment — Naked Gun 33 1/3: The Final Insult — of the Naked Gun trilogy hit theaters. It was preceded by The Naked Gun 2 ½: The Smell of Fear in 1991 and the original The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad! in 1988. The movie franchise was based on the short-lived spoof detective series Police Squad! on ABC. It ran for six episodes in 1982.
