As the year comes to a close and a new one begins, the frenzy that is awards season is underway. There are a bounty of awards with various acronyms attached to their unique trophies. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced their nominees for the 2014 Golden Globe Awards this week. The Golden Globes both piggyback off of the Emmys, which took place in September, and serve as a foreshadowing to the Oscars.

Obviously we’re interested in the comedy offerings. So let’s get to it, shall we?

Also nominated are Monica Potter (Parenthood) and Sofia Vergara (Modern Family) for Best Supporting Actress in a Series, Mini-Series or TV Movie.

On the features side, we saw very different types of comedy films nominated, representing a range from dark and dysfunctional humor to crime comedies to romantic dramadies. One of a couple films that make us question the HFPA’s loose definition of the term ‘comedy’ was nominated actress Julie Delpy’s romantic film Before Midnight. More absurd then that, however, is the inclusion of American Hustle which, is by no means, a comedy; it’s listed as a crime/drama on most movie review and database sites. Then again, these are the same people who nominated The Tourist in exchange for Cher tickets.

Best Actor in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy

  • Bruce Dern (Nebraska)
  • Leonardo DiCaprio (The Wolf of Wall Street)
  • Christian Bale (American Hustle)
  • Oscar Isaac (Inside Llewyn Davis)
  • Joaquin Phoenix (Her)

Best Actress in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy

  • Meryl Streep (August: Osage County)
  • Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Enough Said)
  • Amy Adams (American Hustle)
  • Julie Delpy (Before Midnight)
  • Greta Gerwig (Frances Ha)

Best Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy

  • Nebraska
  • American Hustle
  • The Wolf of Wall Street
  • Inside Llewyn Davis
  • Her

Comedies dominated many of the all-inclusive film categories. Both Alexander Payne (Nebraska) and David O. Russell (American Hustle) are nominated for Best Director – Motion Picture. Comedic writing flooded the Best Screenplay category as well with Bob Nelson (Nebraska), Spike Jonze (Her), and Eric Warren Singer and David O. Russell (American Hustle) all snagging nominations.

American Hustle also had Bradley Cooper nominated for Best Supporting Actor in a Series, Mini-Series or TV Movie and Academy Award winner Jennifer Lawrence nominated for Best Supporting Actress. Nebraska actress June Squibb and Blue Jasmine‘s Sally Hawkins also landed Best Supporting Actress nods.

There to re-teach them about comedy will be the dynamic duo of Tina Fey and nominated actress Amy Poehler. The two co-hosted the 70th Annual Golden Globe Awards earlier this year, giving the ceremony its biggest ratings spike it had seen in six years. The two are scheduled to host the awards show in 2014 and 2015. You can see the awards ceremony broadcast live on Sunday, Jan. 12 on NBC.
