It’s rare to see Woody Allen starring in a film not his own. But John Turturro convinced Allen to star in Turturro’s upcoming Fading Gigolo, including fellow cast members Sharon Stone, Vanessa Paradis, Sofia Vergara and Liev Schreiber. Written and directed by Tuturro, Woody Allen should feel comfortable and at home playing a neurotic, blundering older man, with a younger love interest. His character is a struggling rare-books dealer who convinces his likewise struggling best friend (Turturro) to let him pimp him out to his lonely dermatologist (Stone) for some frisky business, a ménage a trios, involving Vergara’s bored, married female character.
All of which takes place in a dreamy like New York City beautifully shot by Marco Pontecorvo. Turturro has not had widespread success as a director thus far, but having Woody Allen play a pimp named “Dan Bongo” along with a star-studded cast bodes well for Fading Gigolo which opens Friday.
